If you don't feel these things you're most likely to not particularly like them much.
They rock, they ompa, they fascinate, they make you happy. After releasing a live album, a sort of compilation album of lost goodies they did lose a bit of following which only means more room to dance. If they'd recite the phone book of the town Bergen in the same way they're playing their songs it would be the same energy. Their very loyal fanbase growing ever since, also outside Norway where most may not understand a single thing from their absurd but fascinating stories (I speak Swedish which makes it a tad easier to understand) but sing along anyway. Corruption, battles, betrayel, sing and dance, depression, mental illnesses, that's roughly what it's all bout. Their first three albums where oil barrel goodies telling a maffia story about a country that doesn't excist suffering from a war that doesn't excists. In case you never heard of Kaizers Orchestra, this Norwegian 6-piece rock the airwaves since 2001. This in Norwegian, Stavanger dialect, playing a style of music with influences ranging from rock, pop, gypsy, ompa, psychodelia, using organs (the instrument!), oil barrels, guitars, standing bass, a string orchestra, and that's doing them way too short. 1', which is part one of a trilogy telling the story of little girl Violeta who's mother Beatrice is a first class psycho who makes her husband run away with his daughter and hide in the world for Beatrice who as a result of losing her husband and daughter not only goes even more insane but cries 7 buckets of tears, pours gasoline over herself wearing her wedding dress, smokes a cigarette, lights herself on fire, saves herself with her tears and then vows only one thing: revenge. Because halleluja for Kaizers Orchestra and their new album 'Violeta Violeta vol. All in all, "Ompa" is remarkable as a debut album, and I would heartily recommend giving it a listen. The concept album is dead and long burried, they say.Ī good pop song need to follow the usual ABC, they say. Kaizers are talented enough to make it fun to listen to, like "Bak et halleluja", but it becomes a chore by second listen.Ī number of hits, a couple of misses. Kaizer, his Constanze and I)Īn odd choice for the album, the song sounds a bit off the cuff. That said, the brief, fleeting moments of life are goddamned radiant.ġ2.

" Bak et halleluja" (Behind a Hallelujah)Īlmost mournful to a fault, "Bris" is really just a bitter, older "170" after most of the spark is kicked out of it by a life full of bad decisions. For once I prefer Zahl's vocals to Ottesen's.ġ0. I adore the conspiratorial whisper Ottesen adopts for the verses of this one, and it's certainly grand to hear him shift to the swift revelry of the chorus with a dramatic flair rarely seen. A touch longer than I'd have it, ideally.

" Fra sjåfør til passasjer" (From Driver to Passenger)īeautiful melody. I would marry this song.Ī bit on the short side, and the vocals are a bit rough-around-the-edges. I can't find a single second of this song that I am not fully, literally in love with. The vocals are simply perfect, being half-sung, half-cried out in pure military fashion, suiting the "War is Hell" vibe of the song. The instrumentals are deliciously intricate, and definitely some of the best Kaizers have ever put out. "170" is easily my personal favorite off the album. The end result is eclectic, but worth every second. The vocals carry "Bøn" through myriad metric and stylistic changes, none of which fail to entertain. Probably a minute longer than it needs to be. Starting with a screechy little riff, "Ompa" morphs rather quickly into a jazzy little orgasm, culminating in a chorus that can't quite compete and a second verse that's so starkly minimalist that it feels out of place. My one complaint lies in Ottesen's nigh-shouted vocals.Ģ. "Kontroll" starts off a bit rough, but one could argue that the song's charm lies in hearing it coalesce. Kaizers' debut album begins with a driving, forceful number. " Kontroll på kontinentet" (Control over the Continent)
